Module 11: Final Vision Project Learner Considerations
Module 11: Final Vision Project Learner Considerations
Having looked at the websites for the other elementary schools in my district (including my own school's), I notice that they seem fairly static and unlikely to draw repeat visits. I also looked back over the past year's emails shared in the Teacher Librarian's Private Group and noticed little discussion of maintaining school websites or generally of utilizing technology in the library space. My goal with this project is to share what I have done with my colleagues in the hopes that some of the work may be applicable in their contexts or be adaptable for their contexts.
I am planning on organizing my thinking on Google Slides. This is a useful format for a variety of reasons. Firstly, I know that all Teacher Librarians in my district have access to Google Slides and are reasonably comfortable with it. If I used a newer presentation app, some people might be unfamiliar with it and so not engage with the content that I have worked hard to put together. Rachelle K. made this point very well in her most recent blog post (https://feedly.com/i/entry/8eFX0111ci8QEbmRwLN/ERRFkeqZ+9WnXpHHnbuXb1E=_17fbce6e899:c417e2:d076a116). Secondly, it is easy in Google Slides to embed images which are a part and parcel of the work that I will be doing with students (Photographing our new library mascot and staging and photographing examples of Book faces). Thirdly, Google Slides appeals to me because of the ease with which it can be used to present information. My hope is that other Teacher Librarians will be able to use my Google Slides presentations with their own students. Finally, by having my presentation in Google Slides my colleagues will be able to edit and change the work to make this a living document that will improve over time and with the addition of the thinking of others. This idea was directly inspired by reading Keri's blog post about her vision project - thanks Keri! A final reason for wishing to share my ideas with teacher librarians in the district is a self interested one. Inspired by the comic "Library Mascot Cage Match", I think it would be amazing for several libraries in the district to have mascots so that the mascots could interact with one another. The mascots could host one another for tea parties, have friendly rivalries, exchange pen pal letters, etc. Or, we could take things a step further and have the library mascots interact with other local mascots as the Ocean County Library does every year with the town's baseball team's mascot (https://procl.wordpress.com/2014/03/06/mascots-buster-sparks-team-up-for-fun-the-brick-branch/).

Hi Soren,
ReplyDeleteI love how you are thinking about how to expand your project to support your colleagues! I think that this kind of coordination - especially your idea about mascot interactions - is what will draw users back to visit. I found that a big draw for students to visit our class website is when they know there are posts about them. I would usually "preview" new posts on my blog at the end of the day when they were writing in their planners and if they saw that there was photos of them or their work, they would be excited to go home and view the post. This meant that parents were seeing them too. Perhaps you could have a section that highlights what classes are doing in the library and let the classes know when there are posts about them.
I am looking forward to seeing your end product! Best of luck!
-Keri
This is a good narrative post that outlines your project rationale. I appreciate how you are incorporating ideas from your class colleagues. I feel like your vision is really coming into focus.
